Stop. Look. Think.

The Three Seconds That Decide a Wilderness Emergency.

A wilderness emergency doesn't announce itself. It arrives fast, in ordinary conditions, with competing priorities and no time to work anything out from scratch. After five years as an Emergency Medical Responder in Canada's Northwest Territories, I built Wilderness Ready around one truth: the people who come home are the ones who had a system before they needed it.

About Ian

My Most Important Lesson Didn't Come From a Training Manual

It came from over a decade of making real decisions in real conditions — above 60° North, where the margin for error gets thin fast.

I spent 15 years in corporate risk management for a power utility company. I didn't set out to build a wilderness training programme. I set out to be genuinely useful in a difficult environment — and then spent over a decade working out what that actually required.

The Confidence Gap

Your Competence Doesn't Transfer the Way You'd Expect

Most outdoor emergencies don't happen to reckless people. They happen to prepared-enough people — who weren't quite as prepared as they thought.

In your professional life, competence compounds. The more you know and practice, the better your judgement. The better your judgement, the more people trust you with harder problems. You've spent years building that edge, and it shows.

Step into the wilderness, and that competence doesn't carry over the way you'd assume. GPS batteries fail. Weather turns faster than the forecast. Someone twists an ankle three hours from the trailhead. A stream that was crossable this morning isn't crossable now. And the help that would reach you in minutes in a city might be hours away — if it's coming at all.

The Wilderness Confidence Gap

The distance between the confidence that comes from feeling prepared — and the competence that comes from actually being prepared.

You own the gear. You haven't practised the decision.

Most people can identify a first aid kit. Far fewer have rehearsed the ABCD Assessment under conditions that don't allow for pausing to look something up.

You know the theory. You haven't built the reflex.

Reading about the STOP Protocol is different from having it become your automatic first response when something goes wrong.

You trust your instincts. Your instincts were built for a different environment.

The instincts that serve you well in a professional context — move fast, act decisively, keep going — are exactly the instincts that need to be recalibrated for wilderness situations.

The Master Framework

The C.E.R.T.A.I.N. Framework™

The structured decision-making methodology at the heart of Wilderness Ready — and the reason the course is built on certainty, not luck.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior wilderness experience to enrol?
No. This training is designed for people who want to be genuinely useful in a wilderness emergency — regardless of starting point. Beginners and experienced outdoors people both benefit from the system.
How much time does it take?
One hour a day, Friday–Sunday, 6–8 November, starting at 7:00pm ET each evening, plus a live Q&A on Sunday at 7:45pm ET. Can't make it live? Each session stays available to watch afterwards.
Do I need expensive gear to get value from this course?
No. The course teaches decision-making and systems, not gear. You'll learn what actually matters and why, which means you can apply it with whatever resources you have.
Will I receive a certificate?
The free 3-day training doesn't include a certificate. Certification is part of the paid Wilderness Ready course, available after you complete the free training.
What if I don't live in Canada?
The training is delivered online, so location doesn't matter. The skills and decision-making system apply to wilderness anywhere.
What's the difference between Ready to Learn and Wilderness Ready?
Ready to Learn is this free three-day training — the foundation, in about two hours plus live Q&A. Wilderness Ready is the full paid course: ten hours, five modules, built around the C.E.R.T.A.I.N. Framework, finishing with a certificate. You'll hear about it at the end of Day 3.
